Bauer Media Institution Research

I have chosen to base my magazine on Bauer Media Group as it best fits the magazine I wish to produce's genre, representation and target audience based on the magazine's it currently produces.

Summary

For my college magazine, I chose the image of Sophie holding a book in the library. I chose this because I felt this best suited the college magazine as it's inside the college and shows college facilities. I also chose this photo as it's a medium shot which shows half her body and her face. She is smiling on the picture which also gives the magazine a friendly and somewhat happy feel.

I chose the headline "Bede Bulletin" for my college magazine, I chose this because it's alliteration which gives an upbeat tone to the magazine and also because I thought it was something which addressed its whole audience. I chose the put the header in the Sunderland College logo colours to promote the college theme and also create a theme for which I myself could follow for the magazine, this is also why I put the Sunderland College logo alongside the header. I chose the colours for my whole magazine based on the Sunderland College logo, blue, teal, black and white. The font I used was Arial Black this is because I thought this was an attraction to the eye yet wasn't too fancy or took any attention away from the main image or the stories on the front page.

I  chose the stories for my magazine based on some current events which are happening in the college e.g Costa and Enrichment. I also chose them because I feel this is what would most appeal to the audience. I chose to put them in Comic Sans because this font is understood by most people and doesn't distort words in any way which keeps it easier to read. I chose to put what I felt would attract a lot of readers in a coloured box so it's more eye-catching as this is what I feel would attract the most readers. The rest of the stories are in a simple black or white comic sans font to contrast with the background.

I put a twitter and facebook logo on the front of my magazine as I believe this would also appeal to the audience as most teenagers have either or both of these social networking sites and would therefore be of interest to them.

For my contents I followed a similar layout for the contents page and for the exact reasons I have explained above.

Expectations of a College Magazine

Firstly, a college magazine should be simple and not include too much writing as the target audience would not be interested in this. It should also include a number of photographs of the college as this is the base of the magazine. The college magazine will be primarily aimed at students however it will also be of interest to staff and parents.

Secondly, the college magazine should follow a basic yet colourful style to attract its primary audience, the students. Following this there should be a contents page included with details of the college so the reader (the students) can gather a sense of what they're about to read and which particular topics interest them. This will also be useful for students trying to navigate around the magazine quickly and easily. The topics that will be of use to the magazine are things like new courses, important information from the college, term dates, contact details, events to become involved with, career information, university information etc. These topics must also be suitable for adults and therefore need to be written in a formal tone.

Thirdly, the college magazine should not include a price as it's primarily for students and students have more important things to spend their money on. If the magazine was to have a price it would have to be cheap for example 20p however putting a price on the magazine may cause it to lose some of the audience.

Finally, the text should be readable by both male and female as it's aimed at both genders. The text should be formal for the second audience (parents and staff) however still made understandable for it's primary audience (students.) The writers style will have to be very inclusive in order to make the readers feel like they're a part of the college. If the writer is uninviting people may be put off the magazine and the magazine will therefore start to lose audience.
