Class Response (Double Page Spread)

Praise I appreciate: "It's so great and creative, love the colours" + "Love the font of your headline"

Next time I will consider: Adding some text around the image

I liked the idea of promoting the album in the bottom corner of the main image

Double Page Spread (First Draft) & Explanation

Explanation
This is the first draft of my double page spread.
For my double page spread I decided to go for a red, pink and white colour scheme to give a feminine representation relating to my primary audience of women. I included a pull quote, a heading and a drop cap to my double page spread to create a professional look and follow the typical conventional look of a music magazine. For my pull quote I used the word 'anything' and for the title I used 'nothing.' I used both of these words and bolded them to make them stand out among my page as these words provoke negative connotations and will therefore intrigue the reader to read on. To follow the genre of my magazine I had my model pose in a typical indie rock pose which is a well known pose to the genre and would therefore inform the reader of what type of music this magazine entails. I chose Sophie as my subject as I believe she best fit the stereotype for my genre. I chose to place her in a bright red outfit as this makes her stand out against the double page spread portraying the dominance needed for my magazine to reach the target audience. I decided to photograph Sophie in a medium shot in order to get the bright red outfit in to make her stand out amongst the text and keep her as the main focus of my magazine.

I chose to use American Purpose and Arial for this page as Arial is a simple and easy to read font which is why I used this for the main body of my text, so readers don't find difficulty or confusion in reading the text. I then used American Purpose as it's big, bold and stands out amongst anything therefore dragging readers attention straight to this text. This is also why I used American Purpose for the title of the DPS and the pull quote as if the reader is put off of this article for some reason they will be attracted to the pull quote and title from the use of American Purpose and will therefore hopefully be persuaded into reading the rest of the magazine from the use of the written language I have also used.
However I decided to use a different font for my introduction to the article, I used this so readers could distinguish where the start of the article and the introduction. I chose the font Bold & Blue for this as it was again simple to read however it stood out more against the article but didn't override the dominance of American Purpose therefore making it the best to use.

Overall I believe my magazine cover could do with some slight alterations to make it more professional but I believe my first attempt of a double page spread, is a good one.

Image Editing: Front Cover

Before making my front cover I had to edit the image I wanted to use in order to make it look professional and therefore make my magazine look professional also. This is how I did it:

Magazine Front Cover (First Draft) & Explanation

Explanation
I designed my magazine using Photoshop. My magazine meets my target audience in many ways. It first meets my primary audience as it has a dominant photo of my subject Sophie pulling a provocative pose which can only be represented by a woman following a feminine stereotype therefore meeting the needs of my primary audience of women. It then meets my secondary audience of men as this provocative pose would intrigue them to pick up the magazine. I chose to photograph Sophie in a medium shot at eye level with the reader. I did this so the reader feels of a similar importance to Sophie, this is also reinforced by the idea that Sophie's eyes are looking directly to the audience making them feeling included and hopefully enticing them to pick up the magazine. Sophie's body language creates sexual connotations which may show representations of her musical style which attracts my primary audience of women who are interested in her genre as she portrays her indie genre instantly by this pose as this is also a typical indie pose found on other magazines by indie artists such as Lana Del Rey. The indie genre is further shown by the featuring bar at the bottom of the bar which includes many indie artists which, if the rest of the cover hasn't already, will entice the audience to pick up and take an interest in this magazine if they follow this genre.

I decided to place my masthead 'Forte' in the left hand side of my page due the left side third rule and the idea that a readers eye is instantly drawn to the left so from that my audience would keep reading the masthead and hopefully remembering it for future and therefore buying more of this magazine in the future.
I also used the left side third rule for a few of my stories in my magazine, here I placed what I thought people would be most interesting so when the eye is drawn to the left side third they are persuaded by these features to buy the magazine.

I placed my puff in the top right corner, this goes against the left side rule but I made it bright and stand out as much as I could in order to gain attention and therefore gain attention from the audience to this side of the front cover rather than the audience purely focusing on the left side. For my puff I also used a number of fonts to again grab attention however I decided to use the idea of an iTunes download for my puff as these days people don't tend to be interested in posters or CD's and the main means of music today tends to be iTunes therefore persuading the reader to buy this magazine in order to get the free iTunes download, this was shown in my questionnaire I did earlier which shows more people listen to music through iTunes than any other media people also listened to music through YouTube due to the idea it's free which is why I combined the two ideas together to gain a wider audience who will buy purely for the iTunes download however once they buy it they may be inclined to read it which they would hopefully enjoy meaning they'll buy future magazines.

Colour Scheme

I have chosen these colours for my colour scheme as although they point to a more feminine audience (my primary audience) they also attract a male audience (my secondary audience) which therefore cater to both of my target audiences. I also chose these colours as they are best associated with the Indie Rock genre.I included the colour codes for easy reference and to keep the colours the same throughout my magazine. Using these colours throughout will also give me a house-style to my magazine.

Magazine Preparation

For my magazine I have chosen to base it around the Indie Rock genre as this is my favourite music and also a one which was popular in my Music Magazine Survey. My magazine will also include other influences of music such as Indie and Rock. This type of magazine will also appeal to most teenagers.

The magazine I will make will include a front cover, contents page and a double page spread. For the front cover I will include an image which I have taken myself and a story which follows this image, I will also include other stories which will be featured in other parts of the magazine. My contents page will also include images I have taken myself with other stories alongside and page numbers etc. Finally my double page spread will include the main feature on my front cover, with more images I have taken which compliment the story. Left side third will also be a feature which will be shown on my magazine which will contain included stories in the magazine which should hopefully persuade my particular audience to buy the magazine.

The images for my magazine will be taken by me in my house. For my images I will get my friend to sit in a particular pose while I take pictures of her. I will ger her to pose what I think best suits my magazine, I will also style her hair and make-up to fit my magazine. To ensure this image is professional I will edit the image on photoshop and make sure it is of a suitable quality.

My magazine will be original as it’s my own images and it also contains three types of music which isn’t typically found in musc magazine. This also widens the range and audience it can be aimed at.
My target audience will be 16-25 year old, both male and female. My secondary audience will be both working class and lower middle class. This will result in my magazine being cheap so both social classes can afford it. It ill be aimed at these specific groups of people as these are most likely to buy the magazine and who will show more of an interest to this type of music. I have chose both male and female gender as both will be interested in what the magazine contains.
Due to the audience my magazine will range from around £1-2 as this is a price range which they will be able to affor which may entice the audience to buy it.

The people in my magazine will be represented in a similar way to which celebrities in magazines such as Q and NME are. They will be presented in a simple way which doesn’t take any focus away from the content of the magazine. My magazine will include things such as a cover line, a puff and a pug which are all features found on NME or Q, following a similar style.

I will make sure it looks professional by following a house style and small details such as a barcode and sponsors. I will use images which looks proffesional and I will also include proffesional details such as a masthead, a pug, puff, cover lines and sell lines.

Questionnaire Analysis
Gender - There are more females than males that I surveyed. This will make my magazine more likely to appeal to women as I will make my magazine more feminine due to the amount of women who took part in my survey. My primary target audience will be women from 16-30 year olds however as there are still men involved with my survey I will have my secondary audience as men from 16-30. My magazine will cater to this age group as they are the most likely to read magazines shown from my survey. To appeal to my primary audience I will use a female celebrity (which may also appeal to men) I will also use a feminine house style and include content which women would find interesting.

Music - From my survey I have concluded that people mostly listen to music through the internet. To incorporate this into my magazine I will include music links from youtube into my magazine. I will try and attract my audience by advertising internet based websites and links throughout the magazine.

Genre - The most popular genre from my survey is Pop and Indie Rock, I will combine the two genre's together to appeal to a larger audience. I will do this by including celebrities and content which are associated with these two genre's.

Magazine - Q and NME are the two most read magazines. I will follow a similar house-style to these magazines and include content similar to theirs to fit into their category. After studying these magazines I have found that they follow a specific house-style throughout their magazine and they also use strong main images. This is an example I will follow with my magazine.

Buy music - Majority of the people who took part in my survey buy music through iTunes. To se this in my magazine I will offer a free iTunes music download if they buy the magazine. This will entice people to buy the magazine. This will fit into the amount of hours people spend listening to music. People will be able to download the song and access it from their phone whenever they want at whatever time of the day.

Features - The feature which most attracts people who took my survey to a magazine is the celebrities featured. To fit with this I will include a number of celebrities in magazine  which fit the genre of my magazine.

Magazine Flat Plan (Contents Page)

Contents Page Flat Plan:
For my contents page I have decided to follow a Q contents page layout.
I decided to place the title at the top of the page so that the audience can easily navigate through the magazine and find this page easily if they are looking for it.
I decided to place the stories along the left hand side for the left side third rule and as it gives a smooth layout. The top 3 stories are the main stories within the magazine and they will be the most superior  on the page. Whereas the story 4, 5 & 6 will be smaller and less important stories which the audience can read if they are interested. I chose this design as I believe it's the best way to represent my magazine.
I chose to place my main image on the right hand side as I believe this is the best place to put it. As it's the main story it will be the most dominant and take up the most space within the page and therefore attract the audience to the page and story.
I chose to place the magazine name underneath the the title as it gives the page a professional look.

Magazine Flat Plan (Double Page Spread)

Double Page Spread Flat Plan:
For my double page spread I have decided to place the main image on the right hand side as due to the left side third rule, the eye typically follows to the left hand side making it more likely for them to read the article if they see it. If they decide not too they will go to the right hand side to turn the page where hopefully the image and pull quote would then persuade the audience to read the article.
I have decided to place my heading at the top of the page as that is typically where a heading is placed. I also decided to name my heading delicious as it's short and snappy attracting attention.
I decided to place the pull quote beneath the main image as this could be a persuasion technique in the way that the audience will see the quote and hopefully be intrigued to read the article that follows the quote.
I decided to place a strap-line underneath the heading so that the audience can have a quick read to find out what the article is about to hopefully persuade them to read on.
I decided to only have two articles on my page as a lot of writing my put off my target audience with them being quite a young audience.

Magazine Flat Plan (Front Cover)

Front Cover Flat Plan:
For my front cover I have decided to follow a simple and traditional look for my magazine as I believe this would be the safest ideal to go for. By doing this, I believe it will help my magazine look professional and therefore stand out against most new magazines.
I have decided to place the name of my magazine in the left hand third as this is typically known as the place in which the eye is drawn to first making the name of my magazine recognisable and most likely to be remembered by the audience. I have also placed most of the stories on the left side third for this reason also, as the eye is attracted to them therefore resulting in the audience being more likely to read them and hopefully become intrigued and persuade them into buying the magazine.
My main image will take up the whole of the background image underneath the text as this is where it typically belongs and where I think is best to place it.
I have placed by banner along the bottom of the page alongside the bar-code as this isn't as important as the rest of the text however does contain important information for readers. It is placed at the bottom as a last persuasion tool for the viewer to buy it, if they didn't want to buy it before they read the feature banner, they hopefully would after reading it and finding out what content was inside the magazine.
The bar-code, price, issue number and date are placed in the bottom right corner as this is typically where a bar-code is placed on a magazine giving my magazine a traditional look.
I have placed my puff in the top right hand corner as I thought it would help attract attention to the right hand side of the magazine where the third story is which would influence them to read the third story.
Finally, I decided to place my main story along the front of my magazine front cover as it want it to be the most predominant feature of my magazine as it's the most important.

Font and Image Analysis For My Magazine

Images
For my front cover and double page spread I have chosen these two images along with the four fonts above.
I chose image 1 for my front cover as I thought it was a good image and gave a feminine representation which was what I was looking for. I also liked the image as it portrays a sort of sexual but sweet image which is an image that can only be held by a woman and I believed this would best attract my primary audience of women. I took image 1 in my bedroom against my door. I chose my door as it's a plain white background and would therefore be easy to edit the background to whatever colour/shape/size I wanted or needed. I took image 1 on a Monday the day before I started work on my magazine. When taking this picture I had a clear idea of what I wanted for my front cover and I was certain of what I wanted it to look like which is why both pictures fit my magazine perfectly.

I chose image 2 for my double page spread as this portrays the type of music my magazine is aimed at and best portrays the feminine image I am going for. I also chose this image as it's something different, it's not a typical pose and therefore helps maintain my magazine's unique representation. Image 2 was taken in my room against a red wall as this was the best place for the lighting and it gave the image something different to number 1. I took this image the same day as image 1 so again I knew what I was looking for, for my double page spread.
I chose image numbers 3 and 4 for my contents page. I chose number 3 as I thought this followed the sexual yet sweet representation shown in image one creating a sort of house-styele for the images. I also chose this as it's not a typical pose and therefore gives the magazine a unique look to it. This image is stereotypically feminine therefore attracting my primary target audience, another reason which I chose it. However as this image is very feminine and shows a sexual nature it will then attract my secondary audience of men. I took this image against my door as a close up photo as the door gave a plain background making it easier to edit. I decided to take the image close up to focus on my subjects features as I believe these are her best features and leave a number of connotations which can be made by my target audience from the way she looks.
I then chose image 4 as I believe this is a very musical image which keeps focus on the main aspect of the magazine. I also chose it because it follows the same colour scheme of my three previous images despite how it's a different subject. This image denotes the simple idea of music bringing simplicity to my magazine which the other three images don't do. I took this image on my bed as this gave the best light for the image and the colour of the bed matched the subjects nails and hair giving a theme to the image. I took both images the same day as image 1.
Fonts
I chose the font "Lighthouse" as my secondary font as it is well read and is very elegant which will add femininity to my magazine front cover. I will use this font throughout my magazine to create a feminine house-style. I believe this font best portrays elegance, beauty and a classic look and feel to the magazine. These are also all words associated with women which attracts the primary audience of women.
I chose "American Purpose" as my main font as it is simple and bold which attracts attention to it. As well as being bold and simple meaning it is easily read, it looks professional and sophisticated giving my magazine a sophisticated and professional look to it. This font also looks good at any angle, size and in any colour meaning it can easily be edited and changed around to fit my magazine exactly how I wanted it without making my magazine lose any sophistication or professionalism about it and making the font still readable to the audience. This font appears as a superior font instantly attracting the audience.
I then chose "Harabara" as it will give the magazine front cover something different. Although the font is of a similar style to "American Purpose" it features a more rounded and friendly feel to it rather than just being a stand out font it is somewhat of a more smooth and elegant font from the way the words appear and are shaped.
Finally, I chose "Bold and blue" as it is a simple font which is easy to read for the audience.  This will be used for less superior stories in my magazine as it does not hold anything special. However the reason I chose this font for left over text as it will still stand out against the typical story font and therefore give my magazine something different.

Possible Images and Fonts For My Magazine

Images

These are the images I am considering using for my magazine. I have chose these images as I believe they are the best out of all the photo's I have taken. I also chose these photos as they are perfect for my primary audience of women as they all present a feminine representation. I have not yet decided which of these images will go where on my magazine and whether I will use them all.
Fonts

These are the fonts I am considering using for my magazine. I have chose these fonts as I believe they will best attract both of my target audience's and I believe all these fonts create many different connotations and ideas about them.
